pictures from project "August Sander - persécutés / persécuteurs, des hommes du XXe siècle"
diaporama
The project aims to allow two approaches to August Sander's work
A first direct, "instinctive" reading, based on the strength of the gaze, on the power of the presence of the people photographed.
A more 'informed' reading, which places the work in its historical context and presents the author's artistic project.
The spaces are therefore completely reconfigured to serve these two approaches.
The first part, structured and highly documented, combines the photographs with documents and historical works.
The second part presents the groups created by the author (the "portfolios"): The photographs are hung in a large ellipse: this spatial continuity links them all, without hierarchy, without face to face, without opposition or duality.
A final, more intimate space presents a series of contact prints, as well as the biographies of the people photographed.
